A major inspection challenge facing the boiler industries is to examine welds in tubing and plate during the manufacturing, erection, and start-up stages. In the steam generation business, billions are lost annually due to downtime caused by leaks in a plant’s boiler tubes that is in commercial operation. In addition, the problems that are often incurred by OEM’s during the manufacturing and erection of the boiler often creates delays in the project, cost over-runs, and customer/OEM frustration. | The basic principle of radiographic examination of metallic objects is the same as in any other form of radiography. Holes, voids, and discontinuities decrease the attenuation of the X-ray and produce greater exposure on the image. In the coal-fired power generation business alone, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) estimates losses of billions of dollars annually due to downtime caused by leaks in the plants’ boiler tubes.
